PORTLAND TO PARKERSBURG

In Lansing, Iowa after a fairly easy 75 mile day. Fairly flat, so the riding wasn't much of a strain. Tomorrow ALL hills for 45 miles. I will be home in 2 weeks if all goes well. I should be home the first weekend in August but that can change with weather, etc. Once I get to Illinois in 2-3 days, it is very flat and I can go long miles unless i have to ride into the wind. I am now in Lansing, Idaho. The pic of the little dog is my friend Lucy. The painted wall is beautiful and is in Red Wing, MN. The one pic of the Mississippi River does not do the river justice. It sprawls out all over the place and meanders around like a drunken serpant. The pic of the sign stopped me! It struck me funny. In this county in MN the roads were named alphabetically and this one looks a bit strange. The other pics are self expanitory. I am doing fine! A few stats for you! No flats , fastest ave daily speed 13.6 , hotel stays 6 , camping 28 , mechanical problems 0 , health issues 0 , yelled at 1 , flipped off 0 , fastest speed 41.8 in MT mountain , and weight lost ???? No scales! Miss you all! Thank you Bill, Marsha, Kaylain, Roger, Jeff, Judy, and Andrea! Your comments are encouraging and uplifting!

I have had computer problems for a few days I couldn't wait to check out your news sounds like you are doing really good I work with Mr.Fletcher yesterday we were taking about how good you are doing.day 34 ( 20 left ! )good luck

Randy,

I rode by your church sign this morning and thought about the realization of a new church adjacent to Fruth Pharmacy in Mineral Wells spreading the Good News of the Bible.
Who would have thought a church would be built on that very spot, which was once probably a cow pasture? That is miraculous to me! Likewise, your recent statistical blog is also incredible to me. I know He has been watching over you during your potentially dangerous journey. I also think God is creating circumstances that will allow you to return ahead of schedule so you can start construction on HIS HOUSE!
Keep up the super work and keep an eye out for a Hawkeye and keep focused on the " STEEPLE!"

PERSPECTIVE

When I think of the men, women, and children who suffer from disease and hunger throughout the world I realize the smallness of my endeavor. When I think of the men and women who serve in our military defending our freedom and spending months in foreign lands, I realize a 4000 mile bike journey is fairly insignificant. When I think of the elderly who spend the brief time they have left being lonely, and the animals who suffer at the hands of humans I am reminded that my journey is not very important.

My top 10 cycling pet peeves.

10. Any bicycle sold by Wal Mart. There isn't enough good metal in one to make a pie pan!
9. People who throw glass bottles out of car windows.
8. Any cyclist who feels the type of riding they do is the only type of cycling. I think it's great to see anyone on a bike.
7. Bicycle shops that charge to put air in your tires.
6. People throwing things from cars at cyclists. Really stupid!
5. People who yell out the window when passing a cyclist. They must not realize that all we hear is a squeal. Kinda funny actually!
4. Kids and young adults who ride through yards, weave wrecklessly through traffic and stop signs, and in front of cars, causing people to view cycling in a negative way.
3. Cyclists who ride in the road to prove a point. A little common sense goes a long way! I'm not going to argue with a red neck driving a 6000 pound truck with a dog in the back bigger than my bike! The goal is to ride, have fun, and get home alive! I do think we live in an area that needs to be more aware of cycling and hopefully people who ride often and correctly can have an impact on the way we are viewed by automobile drivers.
2. People who know they have dogs that chase bicycles and do nothing. Wonder if they would like them to be pepper sprayed. Of course not!! If its your dog or my legs, I'm choosing my legs!
1. People who don't turn on headlights when it isn't daylight. Maybe they think they are saving gas, too lazy to turn, push, or pull the switch, or maybe they think they are hiding in the dark.. Dumb and dangerous habit!!
